Civil War - Women Contd At the time of the collapse, the building housing the women prisoners in Kansas City, was owned by the estate of Robert Thomas. Thomas daughter who had inherited the estate was married to George Caleb Bingham. Being an artist in need of a studio, Bingham had the building remodeled, adding a 3rd floor. Bingham was selected as treasurer for the state of Missouri and he moved his family to Jefferson City. The building then remained empty for a year and a half until Ewing took it over for a prison. Shortly after the collapse several statements were taken stating that the building was in excellent condition before being turned into a womens prison. Bingham filed a claim against the government demanding $5000.00 for damages that he insisted were caused by the intentional undermining of the building by troops intent on murdering the women. To be continued.
