Clashes erupt in Ganderbal’s Barsoo as people demand govt. jobs Srinagar, July 23: Violent clashes between residents and police erupt in Barsoo area of Ganderbal district after people blocked roads demanding government jobs in return for providing land to the Central University campus, witnesses said here. Sources said that a team of Central University was scheduled to visit the under construction campus at Barsoo Ganderbal. “When people came to know about their visit, they took to streets and blocked roads. Their demand is that they should be provided with government jobs,” sources said. Sources said the team was on their way to the campus when people blocked roads. “They resorted to sloganeering. Police reached on spot and tried to pacify them. However, the agitating didn’t heard to repeated pleas of police and continued their protest,” a witnesses said. “The police resorted to baton charge in order to disperse the protesters. In retaliation, the protesters pelted stones triggering violent clashes in the area. The clashes continued for about two hours during which police responded by firing teargas shells,” another witnesses said. Meanwhile, following violent clashes in the area, the Central University team cancelled their visit and returned back. Sources said the residents of Barsoo had provided their land for the construction of Central University. “The government has paid a compensation of 20 crore rupees to Khurhama and Barsoo residents,” they said, adding basically it was not their land but belonged to Raks and Farms department. “It was given to residents on lease. But despite of all this, they were compensated,” sources said. Many youths in Ganderbal town expressed displeasure over ‘unnecessary’ protests by Barsoo residents and said they want that the Campus should function very soon. (GNS)
