Classic. My best friend from Long Beach High School and I had this very same discussion on the drive over to New Orleans back in the 80s. He stated that he believed because without Christianity the masses would slip into moral decay, nihilism and decadence instantly, so it was worth controlling them with comforting lies. I disagreed back then, on an as yet unfounded faith that folks only use religion to mask their moral failures and seek to find instance atonement to feel better for a spell until they did it again...and again and again. Not being one to simply make an assertion without support may be one of many reasons I am where I am today - now with sufficient data, tested experience and empirical evidence to support my earlier hypothesis. Its a classic scene, encapsulating the same old irrelevant and distracting responses about my character instead of making any sort of effort to actually refute my observations...then getting irritated at me for not buying into the emotional pleas and fearful desperation or giving a respectful pass to the victimization of the charlatans coercion that is so blatantly obvious.
