Classic example of the media taking a good study and wrecking the data for shock value. The study of 11 other studies ( a meta analysis) found no score change on mental status outcomes relative to folic acid, and vitamin B-12 supplementation. The study found that there is a reduction in a toxic metabolic by-product homocysteine. This byproduct is a cardiovascular poison--it harms blood vessels and increases stroke and heart disease risk. If homocysteine is reduced ( and it is by folic acid), your brain blood supply will be better off. Better blood supply to the brain, is always a good thing. Since the actual cause/mechanism of Alzheimers is not understood, and is probably multifactoral (brain trauma, oxidative damage, cardiovascular disease, omega-3 deficiency, b vitamin deficiency, aluminum, Nutri-Sweet, MSG, etc), a singular cure is not likely. A better approach is to improve the Alzheimers sufferers general health, and brain health by removing toxins, stress and proper nutrition. B vitamins will always improve general neurological and cardiovascular health, and so, would be useful in the Alzheimers patient. This is a good study, but its results are wrecked by a sensationalistic media. Please consider the use of B-complex vitamins as beneficial in most neurological disease. In fact, some types of dementia are DIRECTLY related to B vitamin deficiency.
