Fridays show featured top vocalists from home and abroad and was conducted by renown Chinese conductor Lyu Jia. The heart-pumping overture captivates the audience. Though not many can name it as The march of the Swiss soldiers, the piece is well-known across the world. The high-energy finale of the overture is part of the four-act-opera written by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini in the 1800s. Italian vocalist Giovanni Meoni starrs as the protagonist William Tell. This is his first time in China. I am so happy to work with....They are very prepared technically in the vocal aspect and also because the feeling of the music of the opera, said Meoni. The story is based on a Swiss legend. Set in 12th century, Hermann Gessler, a tyrannical ruler of the Habsburg family of Austria arrested William Tell and his son to be executed. Gessler said Tell could redeem his life by shooting an apple off the head of his son, Walter. In a single attempt, expert marksman Tell split the apple with a bolt from his crossbow. The opera version was originally more than 4 hours long. But the NCPA says its 100-minute concert version has captured the essence of the work. Chinese vocalist Song Yuanming stars as Mathilde, a Habsburg princess. We all worked very hard to put together a mini-version of the original, especially the conductor Lyu Jia. We believe we did a good job to make a seamless and quality version that kept all the best bits of the original, Song said. The show also features a beautiful projected backdrop that helps the audience imagine themselves in 12th century Switerland. The music and the stage design present a rich experience to the audience.
