Clayton Week of Action - Illegal Money Lending! Take a look at this Case Study … Janet is in her late 40’s with three children whom have all moved out of the family home. Janets income was stretched with the changes in welfare reform and she was called into the housing office as her rent account was in arrears. The housing officer called the liaise officer to come and speak to Janet after Janet raising some problems with a loan shark. Two years ago Janet received a gas and electric bill for £400 that she could not afford to pay. She knew of a loan shark that lived on her estate that had lent money out for years and borrowed the £400 from the loan shark to repay her bills. The debt went up to £800 and Janet arranged to repay £100 per week. Soon after Janet could not afford to repay £100 per week so went back to the loan shark to reduce the payments. The loan shark refused to reduce the payments but Janet was offered another loan. The £100 was still not affordable so Janet had to keep going back to the loan shark to keep borrowing more money so that she could afford to live. Before she knew it Janet realised that she was trapped by the debt from the loan shark and could see no way out. She had to keep borrowing more money every week. Janet felt very isolated as she could not tell her family as she was embarrassed but realised that this situation had to stop so she stopped living to repay the debt. The liaise officer met with Janet who was very tearful. Janet told the officer that she was so low a few months ago that she was considering taking her own life. Janet was very upset throughout the meeting she told the officer she could not even afford to buy a kettle and had been boiling water in a pan to make herself a cup of tea, she could not afford to buy new light bulbs so that when a light bulb blew she had to move the bulb around her home. Janet is very house proud her washing machine had broken, the floor in her living room was wrecked and she could not even afford to buy Christmas presents for her grandchildren at Christmas. Janet was too scared of the family of loan sharks that she did not feel strong enough to make a statement but spoke with the investigator whom took detailed notes and arranged a warrant within 6 weeks to target the loan sharks address. The IMLT officers raided the loan sharks property and found loan books and £10k in cash. The loan shark family of 3 were all arrested and will be charged in due course as the investigation proceeds. Janet is now much happier as she no longer has to repay the debt to the loan shark and is saving up for a new floor in her home. Janet has joined the credit union and is looking forward to a happy Christmas with her family.
