Cleaner ‘Cleaned Out’ by sifu By WINNIE YEOH [email protected] 4/9/13 GEORGE TOWN: A cleaner pawned all her jewellery and borrowed from friends and a moneylender after a so-called sifu promised her big winnings in four-digit numbers. “My husband and I are childless. He is 69 years old. I thought if I win the money, both of us won’t have to work anymore,” said the woman known as Sandy. Sandy, 56, said she saw a flyer in her letterbox in early June which offered solutions to quick money. “It never crossed my mind that it could be a scam. I didn’t think twice when I made the call,” she said yesterday. Sandy, who is seeking follow-up treatment for cancer, said that a man who called himself Sifu Lim responded and told her to deposit a sum of money as a fee for prayers. “I banked in about RM12,000 in early June and continued to bank in money at least 30 times until last week. He said he would help me buy the four-digit numbers,” she said. The sifu subsequently sent her a copy of a winning ticket on July 11 when she had supposedly won the first prize of RM1.8mil. “But I was required to bank in more money for him to conduct prayers,” she said. Last week, Sandy lodged a police report. Sandy said those whom she had borrowed money from had been pestering her to return their money but she was unable to do so as she earned only RM650 a month while her husband gets just RM800 monthly as a technician. The sifu, when contacted by The Star, merely said that he was from a temple in Kuala Terengganu. He did not acknowledge himself as Sifu Lim. Instead, he asked for the caller’s name and birth date so that he could determine whether she had “fortune in her life”. Subsequent calls to him went unanswered.
