Cleric blames violence in northeast on corruption on Wednesday, 05 March 2014 05:00 Most Reverend Oliver Dashe Doeme, the Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri, yesterday decried the bloodshed going on in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States and called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps in protecting the lives of vulnerable people. He said the fact that Muslims, Christians and even adherents of other faiths are being killed does not speak well of Nigeria, stressing that recent happenings are taking the country back to the Stone Age. “Life is sacred and only God alone should take it. We are witnessing senseless killing of our people, both Christians and Muslims. We are concerned and the press should tell the world. We are praying that the killings stop. Nigeria is blessed with both human and material resources. If we had worked together as one, irrespective of religious, political and ethnic differences, Nigeria would have been one of the greatest countries in the world,” he said. “I am apprehensive because lives are being lost. The spate of killing is increasing. The military is doing its best but there is room for improvement. The equipment given to them is not sufficient to contain the insurgency. They need to be well equipped. Once corruption is tackled, there would be no Boko Haram. If people are empowered, they would concentrate on important things. We must work together and destroy any element that will destroy our common goal. Despite our differences, we must unite and this begins at personal level and should be replicated at higher levels,” he said. He added: “A few Nigerians are sitting on the resources meant to be equitably distributed among the larger population; that is why we are witnessing glaring poverty, unemployment and youth restiveness. Our social, educational and economic systems are in very bad shape. We must fight corruption headlong in order to give the youths that are now going on rampage a sense of direction”.
