Close behind Nowhere Man, I would have to rank this song very highly as one of my favourite songs by the Beatles on Rubber Soul, a period in time which has been described as their folk rock phase. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) was mainly written by John Lennon, with the middle eight co-written with Paul McCartney. Lyrically, it relates to an affair John Lennon was having at the time behind his wifes back. On a more musical note, it was the first example of a rock band including a sitar in one of their songs, played by lead guitarist George Harrison. In 2004, Norwegian Wood was ranked number 83 on Rolling Stone s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. By the way, the standard Japanese translation of the songs title is Noruwei no Mori (ノルウェイの森). The popular 1987 Japanese novel Norwegian Wood by Japanese author Haruki Murakami, which often mentions the song, takes its name from it. The novel was adapted into a film in 2010, which featured the song.
