Co. Kerry II v Cork County III 23/06/2013 On a fantastic sunny Sunday afternoon County Kerry Cricket Club hosted Cork County III in the third division clash of the Munster Cricket League. The hosts captained on the day by Sean Rutland, won the toss, Rutland elected to bat with the weather conditions seeming to be favourable for batsmen. Cork County opened the bowling and were very expensive in their entire bowling innings gifting the hosts with a mass amount of no balls and wides contributing more than half of the Co. Kerry total. The opening partnership between S.Rutland and J.Boulding Sr. looked to be going very well until Boulding Sr. was caught for just 1 run. Rutland was the next to fall once again to a fine catch by the visitors, he made 5 runs. Returning key batsmen Quassim Butt faced a series of deliveries but was eventually trapped LBW and fellow returning batsmen Naail Riaz was also out for a duck by being clean bowled by Aden Kelleher. Kerry seemed to be in disarray at this point until both D. Ramsey (LBW) and Onik Ahammed (Bowled) steadied the Kerry batting line-up and they both made respectable contributions with 5 and 8 runs respectively. It was Kerry’s number 5 who will take the batting plaudits with Usman (Bowled) making a fantastic 16 which was what helped make Kerrys total look healthy amongst the Cork extras. Popular club member Rumbi (Bowled) raised spirits with a fantastic cameo scoring a very respectable 9 runs including a fantastic boundary that will be remembered. The Boulding family affair continued with both J.Boulding Jr. (Caught) and A.Boulding ( Bowled.-Making her first appearance for Co. Kerry) however the game will not be in their highlight reels as both failed to score. 10th Man Mike “The Griff” Griffin was N/O as the Kerry Innings came to an end with a modest total of 95. Bowling Figures (Cork County) J. O’Keefe 2 for 13. Mohammad 1 for 5. Ravi 1 for 26 N. Renzarla 2 for 11 A. Kelleher 1 for 14 L. Stokes 3 for 10 After the restart Kerry opened the bowling with Captain S. Rutland, Kerry’s fielding looked once again very sharp. The opening pair for Cork seemed to be taking a steady start in trying to tackle Kerry’s total. However this wasn’t to last as J. O’Keefe was caught and bowled by the inform bowling of Q.Butt. A.Younus (also opening) was run out for a total of just 3. Kerry seemed to transform into an all-out bowling attack from this point onward as A. Kelleher was bowled by Rutland for 2. However the fantastic batting display from Cork’s number 4 P. Barlow (Unbeaten on 10) proved to be an immovable force that was the anchor Cork needed at this point, however as well as Barlow held his bat he was unable to see his fellow teammates do the same as, Usman, who was as impressive with the ball as well as the bat took 3 vitally important wickets of B.Quinn, R.Kerman and N.Renzala. However the show would be stolen from Usman as young 17 year old Onik Ahammed took the remaining four wickets of T.Kayani (7), M.Kelleher (0), M.Haroon (0) (Hat-trick) and then finally bowling out L.Stokes (0) sealing Co.Kerry III’s first victory of the season. Bowling Figures (Kerry) S.Rutland 1 for 13. Q.Butt 1 for 15. Usman 3 for 14. D.Ramset 0 for 7. O.Ahammed 4 for 10. Overall the game was played in a fantastic spirit and will be remembered for some fine batting, bowling and fielding from both sides and both teams will have a lot to take from this game. With the win for Kerry it could start the mount for the challenge for the Division 3 title and for Cork the chance to see where they can strengthen so as to also mount a challenge. However only time will tell if this was the day that started either team on the road to success for the Division 3 title.
