Coastal development projects such as ports, marinas, jetties, - TopicsExpress

Coastal development projects such as ports, marinas, jetties, groynes, breakwaters and others bear the responsibility of affecting the natural coastal processes. If these project disrupt the natural equilibrium of the shoreline, it could result in shoreline erosion and sedimentation problems which require a rigorous hydraulic study to mitigate the adverse impact. Generally physical modelling and numerical modeling are common tools used in hydraulic studies. Physical model is a hydraulic scaled down model of structure, or earth topology built in the laboratory. Physical modelling can be used to determine the optimum layout of breakwaters, ports and marinas, to select the optimum size of armour rocks, and to some extent to investigate the effects of the coastal structures on shoreline. Numerical model relies on computers and software where the profile map of the study area captured and simulated using certain software. Numerical modelling able to produce a time-series of flow, wave, sediment movement and associated parameters.
