Coincidence? Good Conservation? Or CONservation? The last Selous census showed 66% decline in elephant populations in a five year period, which was one of the determining factors for the USFWS temporary ban on the import of sport hunted elephant trophies from Tanzania. The temporary ban is only for 2014. Selous is predominantly a hunting reserve. Hunters claim their presence deters poachers and that the hunting fees pay for anti-poaching. So a) how do they explain a 66% drop in five years? and b) how can they argue poaching will INCREASE if there is no elephant hunting? They argued for an injunction against the ban, saying poaching would increase. If they havent had a recorded poaching incident in three months does that mean the USFWS ban is WORKING? Remember, they claimed poaching would INCREASE because of the ban.
