Cold air vs. a warming Earth. It may not be a contradiction according to Chief Meteorologist Alan Sealls who says... Theres no doubt youll hear people jokingly comment, how could the Earth be warming, as cold as it is here? It seems odd, until you consider that North America is just a fraction of the globe and the Arctic outbreak is a brief snap. The warming of the planet (land, water, and air) is not uniform and it doesnt mean every place only gets warmer, without record cold. The physics of the atmosphere says that a warmer Earth produces a slightly slower jetstream, that would be more likely to deviate both north and south to create more extreme weather.
