Come and have your whippet stuck for science: Cleft Lip and/or - TopicsExpress

Come and have your whippet stuck for science: Cleft Lip and/or Cleft Palate in Dogs The Bannasch Laboratory in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis is conducting a study to identify the genes responsible for cleft lip and/ or cleft palate in dogs. These are common birth defects characterized by the failure of the lip and/or mouth to fuse during development. Individuals born with these conditions can have difficulty nursing, and as a result, cannot obtain enough nourishment on their own or can develop pneumonia. As a result, puppies are often euthanized following the discovery of cleft lip and/or palate due to their special needs and the high costs of caring for them. Our goal is to identify the genes involved in cleft lip and/or cleft palate formation. In order to accomplish this, our laboratory is in need of blood samples from both healthy Whippets and Whippets with cleft lip and/or cleft palate. If you would like to participate in this study, we will be collecting samples from healthy Whippets at the Pleasanton Conformation Event on October 19, 2013 in Pleasanton, CA. Please also bring along a copy of your dog’s pedigree. For more information, please contact Zena Wolf at [email protected].
