Come on everyone lets all help Danny My Name is Danny Byrne; I am 35 years of age and live in Warrnambool country Victoria. My disability; Cerebral Palsy, means that I have limited movement and am confined to a motorised wheelchair. I live by myself in a flat in Warrnambool and have personal carers, who assist me with my personal and daily living needs. Despite my disability I have always had a dream to represent Australia in sport and have tried hard to find a sport that I can play. In late 2011, I was afforded the opportunity to try a Paralympic sport called “Boccia”, of which I demonstrated I have a natural skill for and this has given me a motivation I have never felt before and the will to improve my life. I am now doing Physio, Hydrotherapy, Speech therapy, Swimming and Gym training and on a healthy eating plan to help with weight loss, stamina. I hope to be able to transfer myself by the 2016 Rio Paralympics. My achievements are as follows: • 2012 State Boccia Titles, Melbourne, 4th • 2012 National Boccia Titles, Sydney 5th • Selected into shadow squad for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. • 2012 – Sports Star Award, Disability • 2013 State Boccia Titles, Melbourne - Silver Medal • 2013 National Boccia Titles, Sydney – 5th • Cemented position in the Shadow Squad for 2016 Rio Paralympics I have been told by my State Coach, that I need to get “match practice” to help combat nerves, which is the only thing holding me back from gaining a position in the Squad for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. In order to do this I need to travel to stronger competitions in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. I also need to compete in at least one International competition to qualify for the Paralympics. In September I will travel to New Zealand to compete at their 2013 National Boccia Championships, which will exhaust the last of mine and my family’s savings. This will cost approximately $4,000 (airfares, accommodation, equipment hire, transfers, competition entry fees, meals). As you can see, getting anywhere is a costly exercise for me, as I not only have to cover my costs, but also the costs of a personal carer, who assists me with my personal and daily living needs. This is why I am writing this letter. It is difficult for me and my family; but; I am asking for your assistance in the form of sponsorship or a donation to help me continue to achieve my dream to represent Australia. Without your help my income will only I support 1 trip to Melbourne to compete at State level, 1 trip to Sydney to compete at National level annually, and the costs associated with my weekly training routine. I estimate that I will need to travel extensively to meet the requirements needed to pursue a position on the Paralympic Squad for the 2016 Rio Paralympics. In recognition of your support; I will keep you informed of how I am going by my Facebook page URL: facebook/DannysRoadToTheParalympics, I will also ensure sponsors are mentioned in all stories published by the local media, unless you don’t wish this to happen. I also hope to have my vehicle painted and sign written to include the emblems or names of those who support me. This will help advertise you, your business and your support for me. I really appreciate any help you can give me (big or small) and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours Sincerely, Danny Byrne Aspiring Paralympic Champion URL: facebook/DannysRoadToTheParalympics Because of my disability & speech impediment I ask if you could please address all correspondence through my mother whom I have asked to help with the co-ordination and administration involved with playing sport at an elite level.
