Comets back to winning ways Comets hosted North Caulfield on Sunday afternoon and got another win on the board after a hiccup last week. The conditions were cool with a chilly wind blowing after the coldest June morning in Melbourne for eleven years. The first opening of the game came in the third minute when Frank Gibson was played in by Jason Rand but he chose to cross instead of taking a shot. Rand then got through on goal but didn’t get enough power in his shot and Famara Djiba in the Caulfield goal got down to it easily. The game was scrappy in the conditions with the next chance coming in the thirty-first minute following a lay off by Antun Vulic to Adam Ventieri who crossed for Gibson. His header was easily held by the tall Djiba. Vulic then hit a half volley straight at Djiba following a goal mouth scramble. Caulfield went up the other end & forced a good save from Robbie Acs in a one on one situation. Comets took the lead in the thirty-eighth minute when Vulic crossed into the area where a Caulfield defender headed the ball over Djiba into his own net. Half-time: 1-0. Vulic had a shot parried by Djiba around his right hand post in the forty-sixth minute in a quick fire start to the second half by Comets. The lead was extended in the 54th minute when Matt Morris-Thomas played the ball to Dominic Branca who got to the byline before crossing into the area. Morris-Thomas had made a run & got to the ball where he squeezed it past Djiba with his left foot. Morris-Thomas made it 3-0 two minutes later after being able to slalom across the Caulfield area before slotting home his second. Caulfield had a chance in the 71st minute but the header was put over the bar. Sean McLaughlan then hit a shot from distance which forced Djiba to tip over the bar. Caulfield put another header over the bar from a corner before putting a shot over the bar. Comets hadn’t cleared their lines despite some good tackles by Chris Reid. McLaughlan put the ball in the net in the 87th minute only to have it ruled out for offside with an interesting decision. Full-time: 3-0. Next game: Comets are away to Frankston Pines on Saturday at 3pm.
