Commercial fishery 11 August 2014 Monday 11 August there was a short 3 hour commercial opening on the flood tide on the Fraser River. Both the “Fraser Lifeboat” and the “Steveston Lifeboat” deployed. They were kept busy escorting Seaspan ferries and a tug and gravel barge. Several 100 fathom nets were observed blocking the channel and the fishing boats were requested to remove them for safety reasons so the commercial traffic could get by. At 1735 a call to CLI for assistance was received from the fishing vessel “Just Smilin” disabled at S6 over on Roberts Bank. The “Fraser Lifeboat”, was closer to the disabled boat and so responded, taking the vessel in tow for Steveston. Approaching the harbour was made difficult owing to their return coinciding with the closing of the fishery. Some 150 fishing vessels were racing into the harbour to line up at the waiting packers to unload. The “Fraser” managed to navigate through the “scrum” where the assisted vessel was secured in Paramount Pond at 1850. Both lifeboats then completed their patrols and returned to the Steveston Station.
