Commission Created To Assess Limbe Floods:- CameroonPostline --Fako Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, Zang III, has created a commission to assess the damage caused by floods in Limbe and seek ways of forestalling future disasters. Thursday, August 1, Zang III took the initiative after a tour of areas affected by floods and landslides in the three Limbe Sub-Divisions. “We went to the field today because we want to solve the problems of those affected. We want their wellbeing; the people have to have confidence in us,” the SDO stated. Zang was accompanied by the Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council, Andrew Motanga, the Divisional Officers, DOs, and Mayors of Limbe I, II and III Sub-Divisions. The SDO said some people have defiantly decided to risk their lives by building on hilly areas, which had long been declared by government as risky and should not be habited. This, among other things, according to Zang, was the cause of the floods and landslides. The SDO gave a one-week deadline to all those who were still perching on the Bakoko hillside settlement where floods recently submerged a house, to vacate the area. In some of the neighbourhoods, Zang urged the inhabitants to build gutters by roadsides, in order to channel run-off water when it rains. While at other areas, he advised the people to organise themselves and channel water away from their houses. “The government cannot do everything. The people, too, need to assist,” he said. Meantime, the Fako Divisional Delegate of Urban Development and Housing, Joseph Tchnagou, disclosed that he was the Secretary of the Commission that has been set up by the SDO to evaluate the level of damage and proffer solutions.
