Common Loon, Gavia immer. Breeding female w/young. Previous year the breeding couple lost both young as I found 2-eggs broken at nesting site prior to full-stage development. Loons are declining due to lead poisoning from sinkers and climate extremes. The communication from one loon to the other is spectacular. John Muir would attest to that. Very protective over their young as you cannot blame them for losing both previous year.
