Local authorities, civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles will be taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies of dedication to mark Commonwealth Day. Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth is a new, unique initiative which has caught the imagination of thousands of participants who are coming together to show their appreciation for the Commonwealth, the opportunities offered to its citizens around the world and what it stands for; including democracy, freedom of expression, tolerance and respect. The initiative will be rolled out to the rest of the Commonwealth in 2015. Trafford Council will mark the occasion by holding a short flag raising ceremony at Trafford Town Hall which will commence at 9.55am. The Mayor of Trafford will read a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation and a message from The Queen before raising the flag simultaneously with other ceremonies across the country at 10am. Year four pupils from Gorse Hill Primary School will be drawing flags which they will ‘plant’ on the day either side of the main flag pole, to represent every country of the Commonwealth. The flags will then fly for the rest of the day. Executive Councillor Jonathan Coupe said: “Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth is a great way of bringing people together to celebrate the diversity of different countries across the world. I’m pleased that Trafford Council is recognising the importance of the Commonwealth, its values and all it stands for by participating in the day.” Trafford Council will be also be flying the Commonwealth Flag at Altrincham and Sale Town Halls.
