Community Characters: When we first came to Eleebana in 1955, on the block two doors from us (later occupied by Bergersons and then Kaisers) stood an ancient, and rickity, one room hovel, complete with an ancient and rickity chimney which spewed smoke day and night, and year round. (The place can be clearly seen, dead centre of this photo, jauntily resting on pylons) The denizen of this dark, halloween reject of a place, was the small, skinny and equally ancient remnants of a man, who seemingly never dressed in anything but an equallly ancient charcoal grey suit: Old Joe Laws. Old Joe was the go to fix it guy, and I remember him coming to our place one dark, rainy night about 9.00pm, when using a tiny, well worn screwdriver and a very dim torch, he replaced a burnt out power point in my brothers bedroom with a few bodgy spare parts he had lying around his humpy.
