Community Reentry Project: Self-Sufficiency Coordinator Position Title: Self-Sufficiency Coordinator Status: One-year renewable contract position Reports To: Community Reentry Project Director Salary Range: $40,000-$45,204 one-year renewable contract position Benefits: Health insurance coverage; paid holiday, personal and sick time off Posting Date: 3/02/14 Closing Date: 3/10/14 Preferred Hire Date: 3/27/14 (negotiable) About The Community Reentry Project The Community Re-Entry Project (CRP) is funded by the City and County of Denver’s Crime Prevention and Control Commission (CPCC) and managed by the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center in partnership with the Denver County Jail and community providers to provide transitional services for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons. The CRP is located at 655 Broadway, Suite 450 Denver, CO 80205. Position Summary The Self-Sufficiency Coordinator focuses on the economic needs of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons by providing career coaching and benefits acquisition services including guidance, assistance and/or training in the areas of disability programs, healthcare and public benefits, and workforce development. The Coordinator will: 1. Increase access to healthcare and public benefits by developing and coordinating a comprehensive enrollment assistance process both in the CRP community office and the Denver County Jail; 2. Assist clients with identifying their enrollment options and complete healthcare and public benefits applications; 3. Collaborate with the Career Development Coordinator and Case Managers to assess participants’ employment readiness and consult on appropriate job placement positions; 4. Develop individualized goal setting and self-sufficiency plans based on a client’s interests, skill level screening and assessments; 5. Strategize with the Career Development Coordinator for the development of employment, training, education and pro-social activity opportunities; 6. Teach classes in the Denver County jail and at the CRP community office for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons. Courses include Cognitive Behavioral Education and Job Readiness intended to improve decision making and employment reintegration skills; 7. Supervise college interns and volunteers to provide pre-employment screening, one-on-one career coaching and basic computer literacy skills. 8. Apply best practice methods to motivate and support clients to attain economic self-sufficiency. 9. Maintain documentation by tracking, recording and reporting data to inform outcome and evaluation measures. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Screening – Conduct individual job and benefits screening appointments with clients to identify: - Benefits eligibility for cash and non-cash benefits such as Medicaid, Medicare, Colorado Indigent Care Program, SSI/SSDI, SNAP, AND, LEAP, Veterans Benefits, WIC, etc. - Job readiness, including current and prior employment, educational attainment, and legal barriers to employment. - Transition clients to the Career Development Coordinator for further assessment and job placement opportunities. Benefits Enrollment Assistance – Identify the appropriate benefits program for screened clients: - Work collaboratively with clients to apply and enroll in programs. - Develop a robust citywide network of partners for a seamless referral and follow-up process. - Advocate with city and state agencies and community service providers to overcome barriers to enrollment. - Work with clients to maximize the use of government and community programs such as Ticket to Work, Vocational Rehabilitation Center and LifeLine Phone to increase stability factors. Career Coaching – Apply client-centered, goal-oriented methods of eliciting and strengthening intrinsic motivation to positively changing the attitudes and patterns of behavior that interfere with successful job placement and retention. - Provide one-on-one coaching to prepare clients to reenter the labor force. - Evaluate an individual’s work history, education, training, job skills, and other qualifications. - Develop individualized career plans by reflecting on past job choices and identifying future career aspirations. - Identify strengths that maximize the individual’s potential for job retention and advancement. - Identify barriers to employment and assist clients with strategies to overcome or address those obstacles. - Provide occupational information to develop realistic educational and vocational plans. - Counsel individuals about their prospective career path and work to expand their field of options. - Provide referrals and follow-up to educational and vocational services. - Apply evidence-based practices including Motivational Interviewing, cognitive behavioral education and situational role-playing to improve decision making and employment reintegration skills; - Research prospective employers and strategies to access the hidden job market. - Assist clients with increasing the following skills: o Employability by writing cover letters and resumes, practicing interview techniques, and reviewing appropriate workplace behaviors. o Computer literacy by tutoring clients on basic computer skills and filling out on-line applications. o Research by using free resources such as the internet, social service agencies, and libraries. o Professional attire by defining professional dress, and identifying clothing and equipment resources. Promote Financial Literacy - Develop short and long term strategies to assist clients with meeting financial obligations: - Develop and teach money management and basic budgeting classes and individualized sessions. - Provide financial guidance and referrals to help rectify tax issues, credit report issues, etc. - Provide a bridge to Denver Human Services to address child support arrearages due to incarceration. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: A Bachelors degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three years working in a direct services capacity. SKILLS: Excellent public speaking and writing skills. Strong interpersonal, social, and problem solving skills. Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite including word processing, data entry, spreadsheet, and Internet technology. Prior teaching or group facilitation experience. Skilled at understanding program implementation and developing data tracking processes. Excellent communication, customer service, and team building, and organizational skills. Ability to research and incorporate best practices methods. Ability to incorporate feedback and perform duties with minimal supervision. Adaptable to working in a variety of situations in high paced settings. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual/bicultural or cultural competency with marginalized populations including: people of color involved in the justice system, people with disabilities, persons with co-occurring disorders, homeless persons or ex-offender populations. OTHER: Ability to pass a criminal background check, although past resolved offenses are not automatic disqualifiers and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
