Comparison shuts the door of happiness: The bamboo fern story: Have you ever looked at your neighbor and wished you had his car or wished to own a big house like your boss or even wanted to look as beautiful as a movie personality? Have you agonized about not being able to have a life like that of your childhood friend? More often than not we tend to compare our lives with that of people around us and wish we were like them. We unnecessarily torment ourselves looking at the lives of people around us, blindly believing that their life is a bed of roses. While it’s acceptable to have a role model to look up to and motivate ourselves to succeed in life, it is absolutely imprudent to sulk over something we haven’t got. This attitude will only make us more and more unhappy and the trait itself will be a barricade to our success. Instead of persistently comparing yourself with others and wishing you were like him or her, evaluate your assets. Remember every individual is bestowed with health, wealth, inherent skills and talents. It is the responsibility of the individual to build up on these and improve his current status to his desired status. In no way is comparison going to help one achieve this. On the contrary, when you constantly try to be like others you’re not only wasting the talents given to you but also treading on an unsuccessful path. One day a man decided to quit; quit his life, relationship, everything including his life. He went to the woods to end his life but not before posing a question to God. He asked “Oh God, give me one reason why I shouldn’t quit?” And God pointed to a fern and a bamboo and told him that he planted them one day hoping to see them grow beautifully. HE took much care to water the plants and ensured that they received good sunlight too. Soon the fern grew up from the ground and covered the ground with beautiful green. The bamboo seed didn’t pick up. Nevertheless, HE didn’t give up on the bamboo. HE continued to water the plant without losing hope for 5 long years. It was in the fifth year that a tiny sprout surfaced from the ground. When compared to the fern the bamboo looked very small because the fern was already 5 years old. But in just 6 months the bamboo grew over 100 feet. How? The bamboo had been strengthening its roots for the last 5 years. Just like the bamboo, your time too will come. In the meantime, rather than worrying about not achieving as much as your neighbor has, spend your time strengthening your roots and never give up! Rather than looking at others with green eyes, be happy for others and remember that others have their problems too. Appreciate what you’ve got and what best you can do with what you have.
