Complaint - English Heritage - Cornwall, the Cornish people and their language (with thanks to Cornish historian, archeologist and author Craig Weatherhill for the historical information) AN KESUNYANS KELTEK - SCOREN GERNEWEK The Cornish Branch of the Celtic League (The Celtic League has Roster Consultative Status at the United Nations) English Heritage 29 Queen Square Bristol BS1 4ND 3 August, 2014 Dear Sir Complaint - English Heritage - Cornwall, the Cornish people and their language May I refer you to the attached photograph which is of an English Heritage poster which is currently on display in Bodmin, Cornwall? We have received several emails concerning this poster from a wide variety of people. The information contained on your poster is inaccurate and offensive and our organisation requests and requires that you remove it forthwith not only from its current site but wherever else you have had it posted. Quite simply, our heritage in Cornwall is pre English and England and was in existence long before the English people arrived in these islands. Nowhere called England even existed until 890 AD. Tintagels main phase of occupation as a seasonal royal seat of Dumnonian kings was between 450AD and 700AD. The castle, nothing more than a folly using its ancient status to promote one mans ultimately successful ambitions, was built by a Norman Plantagenet, Earl Richard of Cornwall, later crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Aachen, which is what he was after, plus becoming the worlds richest man. Quite simply, there is no English historical content at Tintagel. As is the norm, English Heritage is deliberately lying. On the 24 April, 2014, the Government of the United Kingdom formally recognised the Cornish people as a National Minority so affording them equality with the Scottish, Welsh and Irish and incorporating them into the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. A link to the official Government Press Release of 24 April 2014 may be found here: https://gov.uk/government/news/cornish-granted-minority-status-within-the-uk The Cornish language was legally recognised and protected by the UK government under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in 2002. It has further been recognised by UNESCO. Cornwall Council’s policy is to support the language. A motion passed in November 2009 approved the Councils use of Cornish. These various announcements were greeted with joy in Cornwall and represent the culmination of years of campaigning from a massive cross section of people here. As an organisation, we are cognizant of English Heritages hidden agenda having been made very aware of it in the west of Cornwall. However, your quango can rest assured that for as hard as you attempt to erase our pre English culture, an increasing number here are fighting back. We Cornish people are not English and it is high time this was realised. In persistently insisting that we are, English Heritage are acting against the terms and conditions of the European Framework Convention. This organisation demands that you now recognise that the heritage of Cornwall is not English but Cornish. We are in constant contact with Europe concerning your activities and are one of a number of NGOs actively campaigning for your removal from Cornwall and for the establishment of a Cornish Heritage organisation who will better manage what is ours. As George Eustice MP (Con) said a while ago, Its our heritage. not Englands. The Celtic League acts strictly within extant laws but we realise that if you continue to flaunt our heritage, others may be inclined to take direct action. We are surprised that you have thus far failed to heed the lessons of a few years ago when your signage was removed by a group of Cornish activists. Rest assured, in the face of ongoing imperialism and arrogance from English Heritage who are unwelcome in Cornwall, we shall not be found wanting in flagging your blatant bigotry. This letter and your response will be placed in the public domain. Yours sincerely Branch Convener Cornwall Branch Celtic League The Celtic League main website is at: celticleague.net/
