Completed! Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie. Acrylics on peahen tail feather. More time, sweat, and research invested in this one than any preceding it. By far. I did my best to give him more lifelike expression - a hint of a smile, youthful optimism, maybe a hint of mischief. Symbolism- Prince Charles Edward historic tartan painted on the quill. The Italian sconce represents his Italian origins. The 18th century French table represents his Parisian ties. Arthurs Seat may be seen out the window - will this young prince be king? White roses adorn the crystal vase - a Jacobite symbol, two in the bud, one in full bloom - representing King James and his two sons, Charles Edward and Henry Benedict. The wall sconce is adorned with a cameo of King James, the rise of the 15 perhaps lighting the way of the rise of the 45? Prince Charlie was in Edinburgh only a short time, the winter of 1745-46, so I did my best to portray him at the correct age here. The recently-discovered portrait in East Lothian was a life saver in that regard.
