Compline – A Dog Story: “My uncle wanted the dog back but the nuns would have none of it; they claimed that the dog was God’s answer to their prayers”. The uncle who hardly attended mass took the nuns to court, won the case and took his dog back.” Two weeks ago, this strange fellow (long hair, unkempt beard and rumpled) came to my office; he wanted to convalidate his marriage. But then went on to tell me a story about his beloved uncle living somewhere in Ireland. The uncle’s dog had wandered off one morning and went missing. After weeks of searching, the uncle finally found him hanging out in a nearby convent. The nuns had gratefully adopted the dog and the dog appeared quite happy. The convent had an apple orchard and young rascals would frequently climb over the fence to steal the apples. The fellow continued, “But since my uncle’s dog wandered into the convent one morning, the young rascals no longer made their forays into the orchard; all had become quite on the orchard front.” One then can understand the nuns’ gratitude. And he continued, “My uncle wanted the dog back but the nuns would have none of it; they claimed that the dog was God’s answer to their prayers”. The uncle who hardly attended mass took the nuns to court, won the case and took his dog back. But then something touched the uncle’s heart, for a week later, he went back to the convent and made a present of a guard dog to the nuns. “What a neat story” I commented, “and they lived happily ever after.” The priesthood is not really as boring as people do believe.
