Confession #6 A Confession to the Country To The CITIZENS OF INDIA SUBJECT: REQUESTING YOU TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS Respected Citizens, Iam a medico, who has come out from amongst you, who has to rethink her decision time and again. I request you not send your children into this profession if you yourself cannot respect a doctor. Iam addressing only those citizens who whether well educated or not, call doctors money minting machines. Yes i secured a free seat in a government college and you indirectly sponsor my studies but do you think our government colleges are five star hotels where we medicos make merry? Some of you wouldnt even dare step into the college you so called paid taxes for! Such is the condition. The money you invested in me will come to some use in the future, unlike the money you willingly or unwillingly give to corrupt politicians. No i did not choose this field for the sole purpose of healing people for free, i joined this profession because of my love for the science of human body. Whoever could imagine what a sin it is to pursue something you like. We never claimed to be saints. Yes i will take loads of money from you if you are rich ( Iam in a mood to become a modern Robin hood). And why shouldnt I? You do not hesitate to spend thousands of rupees on a lavish fatty lunch which could be the cause of that atherosclerotic plaque wandering in your coronaries(fat in your heart), then why should you have a problem in spending on its treatment? Consider it a punishment, a part of psychotherapy, wherein you will thing like 100 times before having fatty food again knowing how much it will end up costing you( if money is what you cherish more than health). No if you are a poor person i will not charge you a fortune because i took my share from the rich( Iam in the mood of being Robin hood). But will you follow my advice over the preachings of some blah blah BABA or the RMP who claims to treat all your illness without a degree? Yes i have worked hard for years to be able to treat people. Do you doubt that? Then why do you think mere internet is superior over a doctors diagnosis? You think the machine that has been created by human brain(the most complex machine) is better than us? Then ask your internet to treat you and you can save your money. Did you ever try opening all the parts of the refrigerator to repair it(unless ocourse you are Ranchod Das Shyamal Das Chanchad)? I dont think you did. You must have called the electrician. Then why did you think you could do a doctors job on your own by self medication? I do not condemn the internet. We doctors also learn from the internet. But do you think 1 day of searching online is superior to 6 n 1/2 years of medical training? Back to money minting, dont you spend weekends in a movie theatre relaxing after a hectic week? We have a hectic schedule everyday till we turn 50 so how do we afford relaxation? Apples cost 50 Rs/ apple now how can we afford an apple a day to keep ourselves away from other doctors if we dont try to earn? Okay even if we did join MBBS for free public service why should this be forced on our spouses and children? What is it that pricks you so much if we make a little money (which most of you expect out of us). Our relatives think we are rich as hell because we are a doctor family. Little do they know that white money can never compete with the black money they can mint. So will you blame every profession because some bad people resort to selfish means? No you wont. You only target doctors because you gave them a place next to god and you force it on them to be a selfless serving person. Even Tirupati Balaji wont grant you wishes till you put a coin in the hundi then how do you expect us to treat all for free? Ah i can go on and on about this so lets change the topic. Okay now a question to those who criticize us for opposing the governments mandatory rural service scheme. Forget about the horrible facilities we will be given in the name of public service. You dont mind if people in the rural area are going to be treated by inexperienced students who have just finished their internship? Okay then will you guarantee us safety from fathers who will blame us if their son dies? Yes we have read about malaria in our text books but have never seen a case of cerebral malaria till date so will you excuse us if we lose hope in treating your mother? Will you promise not to burn down the rural health centre and beat us fresh graduates up if some doctor far away was caught for a scandal? And the most important question! Iam ready to serve the people in RURAL INDIA keeping at bay my emotions if a child could not be rescued due to lack of experienced professionals. Iam ready to help the government pocket more money by employing us for the bulk work. Iam even ready to face the wrath of angry mobs who will attack us if we fail. BUT WILL YOU ATLEAST THEN START RESPECTING US DOCTORS FOR WHAT WE DID DO AND WILL BE DOING AS OUR DUTY AND STOP PUNISHING INNOCENT DOCTORS FOR A FEW ROTTEN FISH AMONGST US? Awaiting your reply. Yours faithfully, A FUTURE DOCTOR
