Confession time: I once stabbed a coworker over a game of Diplomacy. I was working at a game company in Baltimore (The Armory) and everyone in the office played. The game got seriously intense, with all sorts of secret deal-making and breaking. Michael Marshall and I worked together, and he can corroborate this heinous story. My coworkers name was Ron. I stabbed his fist with an X-Acto knife. It was purely accidental—I was holding the knife (I was cutting some art for a catalog when he confronted me) and he got angry at one of my moves (I broke an alliance with him and attacked his country) so he jabbed his fist toward my face. I reflexively held up my hand and the blade went into his fist. I was terribly apologetic and luckily the wound was clean and not very deep. He almost passed out. I cant remember if he had to get stitches or not. I felt like an asshole, even though I knew he was partly to blame for jabbing his fist at me. So . . . Ron Laporte, if youre out there, Im still sorry about all that. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. But you *did* flip the board in the middle of an intense game—and for that I will never, ever forgive you for.
