Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing. - August Wilson, two-time Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award and New York Drama Critics Circle Award winner Wilson was born Frederick August Kittel, Jr. in 1945 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the fourth of six children to German immigrant baker, Frederick August Kittel, Sr. and Daisy Wilson, an African American cleaning woman, from North Carolina. Wilsons maternal grandmother walked from North Carolina to Pennsylvania in search of a better life. His mother raised the children alone by the time he was five in a two-room apartment above a grocery store. He attended school until the age of 15, but was largely self-educated. He spent so much time reading at the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh that they later awarded him an honorary degree.
