Confronting Your Sin Scripture reading: Romans 7:4–25 Key verse: Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Man’s natural state is one of sinfulness. It is a direct result of the fall of mankind and the rebellion Adam and Eve demonstrated in the Garden of Eden. Our fallen nature is evident in feelings and emotions such as jealousy, anger, fear, resentment, unforgiveness, and more. When the apostle Paul became aware of the depth of his sin, he cried out: “Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this [spiritual] death?” (Rom. 7:24 nasb). Confronting your sinfulness should bring the same response from you. Left on our own with no thought of God, we would be controlled by sin. It is only by the grace of God and the mercy of Jesus Christ that we can say with the apostle Paul, “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Only Jesus Christ saves us from the clutches of sin. And only He can change hearts and provide an opportunity for new life. We can choose to live for Him and turn from evil, but first we must come to a point where we see our sin as He sees it. There’s nothing glamorous about sin. It separates us from God and keeps us from experiencing His marvelous blessings. Ask the Lord to surface anything in your life that reflects the old nature. Pray for Him to give you the strength to walk in the light of His grace. Lord, only You can set me free. Save me from the clutches of sin. Change my heart and give me a new life.
