Congratulation Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke Newly-appointed Somali Prime Minister has won the confidence of the countrys legislative assembly, where he took the oath of office on Wednesday. At least 218 lawmakers voted in favor of Sharmarke, while six abstained in Wednesdays vote session, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari said. After winning the confidence vote, Sharmarke was sworn in before the assembly and in the presence of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud Under the Somali constitution, Sharmarke will have 30 days to form his government. PM background Sharmake was born in 1960 in Mogadishu, situated in the southeastern Banaadir province of Somalia. He is the son of the former second President and first Prime Minister of Somalia, Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, who was assassinated in 1969, and Ruqia Dahir Ali Boss, the daughter of a well-known Somali Islamic scholar. His family belongs to the Majeerteen Harti Darod clan and originally hails from Somalias northeastern Puntland region. Sharmarke studied at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he earned degrees in political science and political economy. Although his family is based in Virginia in the United States, he holds both Somalian and Canadian citizenship Sharmarke’s first professional jobs were for a Somali bank and for Coca-Cola. He later went to work for the non-governmental organization Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives in Canada. Sharmarke went to work for the United Nations in 2000, serving in Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone and the Darfur region of Sudan, where he was a political advisor. He also worked as a foreign policy adviser to former Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf, who left office in 2008. Sharmarke indicated that the infighting between himself and incumbent President Sharif Ahmed had become a security vulnerability and that he had opted instead to save the nation by voluntarily stepping down. Prime Minister of Somalia, 2nd term On 17 December 2014, Sharmarke was reappointed Prime Minister of Somalia by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. He replaced Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, who was voted out of office by the Federal Parliament. Mohamud indicated that he nominated Sharmarke both on his own volition and at the recommendation of local and international partners. He also commended Sharmarke for strengthening diplomatic ties between the Somalian and U.S. governments during his brief tenure as Somalias Ambassador to the United States. In his acceptance speech, Sharmarke pledged to form a broad-based Cabinet and work towards meeting the goals enshrined in Vision 2016. The regional Puntland and Jubaland administrations as well as the AU Special Representative for Somalia and the Ambassador of Germany to Somalia all issued press statements welcoming his appointment.
