Edward Hospital nurses in elite company, earn third Magnet designation (Naperville, IL – December 19, 2014) – Edward Hospital has achieved designation for the third time as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Edward, which employs 1,200 nurses, was originally recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2005 and was first re-designated in 2010. The second re-designation means Edward is one of only six hospitals in Illinois to have achieved Magnet status three times or more. There are 38 Magnet organizations in Illinois. Edward is one of only three hospitals in DuPage County and the only one serving Will County to have earned the prestigious designation. Of the nation’s 6,000 hospitals, only seven percent (about 400) are recognized as Magnet facilities by the ANCC. With an audience of Edward nurses, nursing leaders and senior executives in the Edward Hospital Education Center Auditorium, Deborah Zimmerman, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chair of the Commission on Magnet Recognition, made the re-designation announcement during a conference call Friday, December 19. Listening in on the call were Magnet appraisers who visited Edward in October. “As a result of our final review, it gives me great honor and privilege to officially notify you that the Commission has unanimously voted to credential Edward Hospital as Magnet once again,” said Zimmerman. “Clearly, you are deserving of this re-designation. You are an example to all Magnet hospitals in so many areas. This is a testament to your commitment to excellence. It is obvious that you are committed to your entire professional team and most importantly you are dedicated to the patients that you serve.” “For nurses, it means top honors. It really means that we are committed to knowing and partnering with our patients, with our family members, with our community to make things better for them,” said Patti Ludwig-Beymer, PhD, RN, CTN-A, NEA-BC, CPPS, FAAN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, Edward Hospital. “Magnet re-designation means we’re committed to being part of an inter-disciplinary team that provides phenomenal care to all patients at all sites at all times. While Magnet says a lot about nursing, it also says so much about the commitment of this organization.” In order to maintain its Magnet designation, Edward submitted nearly 3,200 pages of written documentation, required as part of a rigorous process that also included a three-day site visit by Magnet appraisers in October 2014 to review all aspects of Edward’s nursing care.
