Congratulations to Zolon, SLCC and Sixers for winning their respective division championship. Congratulations also to the EC for doing an outstanding job yet again this year. As the WCL 2014 season is about to end, I wanted to share my thoughts on a couple of things that I observed. Please note that the purpose of this post is not to throw mud on anyone but just to share what I noticed. Firstly, I must admit that this year I did not follow Division 1 and Division 2 in much detail; not as much as I followed the Premier Division. Recently there was a discussion on the playoff structure for Div 1 and 2. Since I didnt follow those two divisions, I did not participate in that discussion. But what forced me to think about the playoff structure was the PD semi-finals. Tigers and VA have been the two most consistent teams in the recent past, including this year. One bad day and they were both knocked out! I think we all as a league should review the playoff structure. I would suggest doing something similar to the IPL playoff format. There is no doubt that at the end of the regular season, teams with #1 and #2 seeding would most probably be the two most consistent teams of that year. The chart shows the format I propose. This will add one more week of playoffs but I think it is fairer especially for the consistent teams of the year. In case a division has 6 teams instead of 7, the #6 v/s #7 doesn’t happen and the rest remains the same. The second observation is not a new one but something that I find a bit sad. For the PD finals, I wasn’t rooting for any particular team but I must admit that had Cosmos won the finals (no offense to Zolon), I would have been slightly more happy. Again not throwing mud on any teams but looking at the recent history of PD, the rate of success in PD has become proportional to the amount of money spent by a team. In other words, not only does a team need a good captain on the field, it also needs a good recruiter off the field. I have high respect for all the teams in PD and I am in favor of inviting quality players from other leagues to come play in WCL. But I wish that would happen more consistently rather than them just playing the minimum number of games to qualify for playoffs. I personally don’t think there is a solution to this; maybe increasing the minimum numbers of games needed to qualify for playoffs but that still wouldn’t solve the issue. In my opinion I find it a bit odd that the message coming out of the league is that you have to spend money in order to be successful; which sometimes could be something in order of thousands of dollars. Again, this is just my opinion from what I have observed. My two cents!!
