Congratulations to all 2013 KCSE candidates! Its been a long, tortuous journey and clearing highschool is no mean feat. Those years of struggle and hardwork will never be in vain.This marks yet another big task ahead,,,choosing and shaping your careers. Remember that this is a longterm commitment to a specific field and therefore leave no room for mistakes,though we learn from them. Just a few insights to help: 1. Be open minded- dont tie your aspirations on only the traditionally accustomed career paths. You dont have to choose a career to be formerly employed by someone;being your own boss rocks! 2. Soul- search- give your self time and analyse all the options that you have. Dont rush to making a decision; it may later become your everyday burden. Your dreams and expectations should be cushioned in this important decision. Meditate about it, and pray for the Almightys guidance. 3.Interests, Values and hobbies- Remember it will be a lifelong commitment;you dont have to end up some place you wont be happy with. Successful career development is achieved from the personal satisfaction in whatever you are pursuing. Be keen on choosing a path that is tied to your passions and interests. Figuring what you should do with your life requires you to know yourself well. 4.Un-due influence_People end up pursuing careers just because parents or relatives direct them on what to do. For once think of this as your life; your daily thoughts will be rotating around the career that you choose.Let no-one choose a career for you;however be free to ask others of their thoughts on the options you have. Remember many people in your midst have an expansive knowledge of the market trends out there and they can be very resourceful in guiding you. Dont hesitate to ask questions;many people out here are willing to help. 5.Market trends- The job market is dynamic and ever changing. Many people are rushing to take up courses just for the sake of it; please dont. Our society is fast changing with various needs and demands;be insightful of how stable the market will be 10 years into your career. 6. Be realistic- Various courses require various KCSE grades and maybe good passes in specific subjects. If you are keen on joining the University, know how to calculate the cluster points used by the admission board. This will guide you in eliminating some courses whose admission points may be beyond your grade.Work with what you have;the market is a huge playing field and can accommodate us all provided you got the right skills for a job. Start from somewhere and work your way up the ladder;it takes time nut it calls for perseverance, resilience and persistence.Remember post-highschool training is meant to instill various skills,knowledge and values in you to prepare you for a future ahead. I hope this helps as you brace yourself for this journey. Just set your mind on it and ready your entire self.
