Congratulations to the state of Maine as it has created a new dental hygiene therapist designation! Governor Paul LePage signed the bill into law on April 28. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association is applauding this development as the new member of the oral health care team will be a registered dental hygienist with additional education and experience. Dental hygiene therapists in Maine will perform duties, including: assessment, cavity preparations and restorations, simple extractions, placement of crowns and space maintainers, referrals, administration of local and nitrous oxide anesthesia, preventive services, and trauma management, as well as administration of radiographs, and dispensing and administering medications within the scope of the written practice agreement.
