Congratulations to this week’s Magnificent Mom – Angela Piccolo DiMauro! You are an inspiration to us all! Angela Piccolo DiMauro “Sports are a big part of our entire family all year round. Dominic has been playing sports since he was 4 years old starting with soccer. He has been playing Football and Baseball since he was 5 and Basketball since7. Playing three sports throughout the year keeps him and our Family very busy. My Husband is also his coach for all three sports and the Head Coach for Football and Baseball. This results in me being a team mom and my youngest son Sonny being the team Mascot for each team since he is too young to play a sport yet. From the first week of August until the last week of June we have non-stop games from season to season. Although it seems as we are always busy and on the go and that most of our meals are prepared in a crock pot, I would not change it for a second. We both come from families that were heavily involved in sports. Sports have been a way of life to the point that it is an expected part of the day for our family. My Husband and I feel that sports are very important to a child. It teaches them teamwork, discipline, respect and sportsmanship to name a few. My Husband also stresses to Dominic’s Football team that as important as it may seem, Football comes third with Family and School coming first and second. When Dominic was about six months old my Husband and I were told Dominic could never play a contact sport. We had brought Dominic to the Doctor after he experienced what looked like popped blood vessels in his forehead. After being referred to a Hematologist we were informed that Dominic had Von Willebrand disease, or vWD. It is an inherited disorder that affects the bloods ability to clot properly. As a result of the finding’s it was the Doctor’s recommendation to avoid every contact sport. Instantly my husband was in tears as he thought he would never see his son play Football. Since then we have had Dominic re-tested which revealed that he may not have the most severe type as initially reported but still had the disease. Well fast forward three seasons later, Dominic is in his second season of tackle football. That’s right I said tackle. And as if that is not enough he is in 3rd grade and playing up a level on the 4th grade team. Even though he is almost the smallest kid on the team and a year younger, you would never know. He is such a tough little boy with a big heart and such a drive to always do his best. Being fearful of what may happen to him has now taken a backseat to me yelling and screaming for him from the sidelines. My husband and I love watching him play sports and have fun building lasting memories with his teammates. I love the young man that he is becoming at home, in school and in sports. I owe a lot of this to him playing sports and learning the commitment and dedication required achieve success. We can’t wait until next year when the madness is doubled with Sonny trading in his mascot uniforms for his own. Maybe then he will stop putting on Dominic’s uniform every night and saying Mom, I can play football next year.
