Mica, I have to agree with your esteemed colleague, Representative Peter King of New York: “If Obamacare is as bad as we say it’s going to be, then we should pick up a lot of seats in the next election and we should win the presidency in 2016. This idea of going through the side door to take something you lost through the front door -- to me it’s wrong.” In a surprising moment of insight, he has articulated the travesty of democratic governance at the core of your party’s strategy. Checks and balances, separation of powers, regular order, elections: who cares about all that when you can use the threat of a government shutdown as “leverage”? The collective wisdom of The Electorate, House, Senate, President and Supreme Court: who needs it when you have the confidence provided by deep-seeded arrogance? You can’t claim to respect and love democracy when you bypass it. You can’t claim to govern when you ignore the norms of government. You can’t claim to defend and protect the Constitution when you shove it aside. After four years, two elections, and 42 votes, you have failed to win this debate. That is the system telling you your argument is not good enough. Instead of showing humility in the face of that judgment, you chose to threaten the future of the nation that made it.
