Connecting Kids to Real Food at Los Luceros Historical Ranch Los Luceros, New Mexico For immediate release The New Mexico Acequia Association and La Tierra Montessori School for the Arts and Sciences will host a free educational event with 12 national service members of FoodCorps at the Historic Los Luceros Ranch June 27th. The day will begin with a tour of the Ranch including the La Tierra students’ 10,000 square foot vegetable and herb garden at 9:00am. A lively discussion with Roger Montoya, the school’s co-founder and Arts and culture Coordinator, will engage community and partnership organizations at 10:00 am. The topic is about Acequia based Education. This educational event is part of the school’s science and sustainable agriculture curriculum for La Tierra students, staff and the community. La Tierra Montessori School for Arts and Sciences is committed to providing practical life skills for a sustainable future vis-à-vis viable career options in agriculture and earth stewardship. For you foodies out there, a group meal will be prepared 11:00am -1:00pm. The following hour will focus on sustainable agricultural training centered on traditional Acequia irrigation techniques. At 2:00pm Carlos Bustos, an expert in acequia education and governance, will lead a workshop on soil testing. FoodCorps envisions a nation of healthy children who know what healthy food is, how it grows and where it comes from. FoodCorps is a non-profit organization that began in 2009 after President Obama signed the Kennedy Serve America Act into law. This legislation signaled a new opportunity to engage AmeriCorps in building a more sustainable, healthful and equitable food system.
