Consider consciousness to be a highway that we travel all through - TopicsExpress

Consider consciousness to be a highway that we travel all through life. As we travel the highway we advance in consciousness through learning, experiencing and growing. As we do not all learn and grow evenly or at the same rate, the highway has three lanes The left lane is the passing lane for those who know only one speed: full speed ahead. Then there is the middle lane for the steady and consistent. And finally there is the right lane for the slower drivers who are in little hurry to get anywhere or who have not the interest nor desire to go very fast. Any driver may switch lanes through their lifetime, back and forth. There are also off-ramps to the highway which we may take, sometimes consciously and sometimes less consciously. We still feel we are moving, and we are, but it is in more of a horizontal direction to the main highway, for consciousness expands out to infinity in all directions, and there is much to be explored sometimes in horizontal directions, even though we stop moving forward down the main highway. Much if not most of humanity, at least at times, take off-ramps as they can be quite alluring, especially in our quest for truth and meaning in life, as many of these off-ramps have been quite traveled and are quite established in the psyches of humanity in the form of beliefs, customs and rituals, affording them an attractiveness that can be quite powerful. Some of these off-ramps have become so established that they have become accepted as main highways, although falsely, and indemnified into the psyches of mankind through belief and faith. Those who travel these off-ramps and believe they are on a main highway of truth cannot be deterred nor deflected from their appointed direction as they find such truth and meaning that their path is so fulfilling that it becomes who they are. They subsequently associate so strongly with their direction in life that there is no distinction between who they are and the road they are traveling. This is the danger of off-ramps, for they can distract and mislead for very long periods of time, passing themselves off as main highways when they are anything but - for what people dont realize is that when you travel in any direction, you will automatically find what you might consider truth and meaning that support that direction, as truth and meaning are where you look for them/find them - and thus, any direction can be defended and maintained unto itself - even against all others - from within. Its a looping thing - once you are totally convinced something is true and actual, then that, in and of itself becomes the proof and the defense. By way of contrast, lets discuss the left lane of the main highway. This lane is by far the least traveled for it requires a total commitment to ultimate truth and reality no matter what lies down the road. A person must be ready and able to give up all he or she thinks or believes currently for what may appear around the bend. This takes a rugged determination and an absolute honesty with ones self to NOT be satisfied with anything that appeases nor satiates the ego nor glorifies the individual - but to always keep moving forward at warp speed. These people are few and far between. As a matter of course, the faster and farther you go in the left lane, the farther away you get from 99% of humanity, for the left lane is the least desirable for most travelers- as it does not coddle nor make grand promises for this life or the next. It is reality. It is what is and how things work and interrelate independently of what anyone thinks or believes. It is reality with a capital R - which includes all that life is - how it got here - what may have generated it - what might transcend it - what might impel this universe, etc., and it is completely FREE of rhetoric, philosophy, theology and the like. It is unvarnished reality, which is the only true reality. I have been a left-lane, pedal to the metal guy my whole life. I feel I have gotten far enough to realize certain axioms that probably hold true in the macro, such as: the road of consciousness is infinite. There is no end to the advancement or refinement of consciousness. It is a metaphor for the universe, if you will. And thus, life is less about finding our comfortable, personalized off-ramps as it is about advancing in consciousness as far as possible in one incarnation that we might transcend reality after reality, such as this earthly one which is replete with smoke and mirrors - the biggest illusion being that things (and life) appear to be separate from one another - that there can be absolute differences which support absolute distinction or separateness. And that this apparent separateness can translate into absolute and separate destinies as it were - that things can remain eternally separate. If the universe is our mirror, then it absolutely discounts this illusion. Our goal is to graduate off this physical plane and move to a higher one. But it takes a very long time and much travel to transcend the illusions of this plane. It takes hundreds and hundreds of lifetimes, as most of us are on off-ramps or in the right lane, more absorbed by our lives and just living every day than in attending to our consciousnesses - and as well it should be - for we evolve though living and making choices and realizing where we are by knowing where we were before (where we came from) - and so, these off-ramps actually can prove useful - as when we finally get OFF them, they become object lessons as to how we can be sidetracked by our own predilections and desires to fulfill our own versions of truth and reality - which are most times, very narrow. We are creatures of comfort, and we fear the unknown - so we feather our nests of what we deem knowable and comfortable and live our lives in comfort with a false certitude that we have arrived somewhere in knowing that will take us into eternity without a hitch nor a wobble - when all we have accomplished is the placating of our own psyches and our need for comfort, certitude and safely - the three things that are anathema to those in the left lane on the main highway - when in the macro, consciousness is open-ended and thus our road is eternal. There is no destination in life or in consciousness. There is only the ride with its road marks in consciousness that signify our own advancement - not very compelling nor alluring one might say, but to the left-laners, there is nothing more inspiring than to see and to know things as they are, and not as we would choose or believe - for in reality with a capital R, there is ultimate knowing - and that knowing is what sets us free.
