Consider the following quote: Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire. --Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (brainyquote) -I read him in both undergrad and seminary (ok, I dropped out), particularly regarding his evolutionary view of human history. Thought it was rather profound at the time. -Now in late spring of life, I see that he missed the second discovery of fire. Most of us dismiss out of hand the tongues of fire at the Upper Room. Our accepting Lukes reporting integrity except here has quenched the second discovery of fire (my modest opinion), and it has hardly moved beyond the NT Church. Hence, we have nominal NT Church Authority and less of its Power. I propose that when the 21st Century Church discovers fire for the second time, as revealed by God Himself to the folk in the upper room, perhaps there will once again be a relevant evangelist calling; I would argue that otherwise, the church cant argue its own existence (at least to the tune of calling others to leave their lives as the disciples did), to follow along with us. Hope you dont unfriend me on this one. Food for thought from a friend.
