Consider this: In 2001 total revenue for the Alberta government - TopicsExpress

Consider this: In 2001 total revenue for the Alberta government was $25.5 Billion. Ten years later, in 2011, that revenue had risen to $34 Billion, which isnt hard to understand with the increases to oil and gas prices, huge coalbed methane projects being completed, and a flurry of investment in the oil sands. So where did that extra $8.5 Billion go? To schools? To hospitals? to roads? $8.1 Billion of the $8.5 Billion went to increases in the civil service! In other words just about all of that cash went for higher wages, perks, and a bigger bureaucracy! If Alberta just got its civil service costs down to the average of the other 9 provinces there would be an immediate saving of $5 Billion dollars.....which is about the same amount as we are borrowing this year! We dont have a revenue problem......we have a spending problem......in particular a bloated bureaucracy!(figures from the School of Public Policy-U of C)
