Constitution of the State of Utah PREAMBLE Grateful to Almighty - TopicsExpress

Constitution of the State of Utah PREAMBLE Grateful to Almighty God for life and liberty, we, the people of Utah, in order to secure and perpetuate the principles of free government, do ordain and establish this CONSTITUTION. ARTICLE I DECLARATION OF RIGHTS Sec. 6. [Right to bear arms.] The people have the right to bear arms for their security and defense, but the Legislature may regulate the exercise of this right by law. ARTICLE XV MILITIA Section 1. [How constituted.] The militia shall consist of all able-bodied male inhabitants of the State, between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years, except such as are exempted by law. Sec. 2. [Organization and equipment.] The Legislature shall provide by law for the organization, equipment and discipline of the militia, which shall conform as nearly as practicable to the regulations for the government of the armies of the United States. I found this a rather interesting read, for a long and rather boring document. Not particularly liking the last part of Sec.6 after the colon. As it flies in direct opposition of the 2nd Amendment of the United States to which elsewhere in the Utah Constitution it states is the Supreme Law of the Land. The part about 10 cents a mile for office holders as their only compensation was rather funny. The state milita part is rather sparse but there is a lot about education and religion. One other area that bothers me since I moved here with grade school children 19-20 years ago, is the references to education and religion. There are mormon church buildings physically next to each school and non mormon children take an additional class such as study hall or an elective (good as they can graduate early to go to college sooner) to allow mormon children to attend church sponsored training classes of some sort in these buildings and get the same credit the other kids do towards graduation. To the casual observer the buildings look to be part of the public school, which I believe is a violation of the state constitution.
