Consulate Karachi spokesperson Brian Asmus talked via Skype to students at the Lincoln Corner Khairpur. Asmus discussed U.S. Independence Day, its history and traditions. Asmus said the American Revolution was not a one-off event but a continuous effort. Initially, it established a democratic form of government, but one, he said, that did not include all Americans. Over the next two centuries, the rights enshrined in the Constitution were extended to African-Americans, women and other groups. The U.S., he said, is not perfect but one of its great strengths is to learn from its mistakes by respecting and listening to voices of dissent. “We are a work in progress,” said Asmus, “but the most important thing is that we are, in fact, progressing.”
