Contact is a 1997 movie based on the novel of the same name, written by Carl Sagan. The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis, and starred Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. The premise is that the SETI search finally turns up a message from outer space. The message tells humanity how to build a machine -- but what will the machine do? Some people say it will destroy the world. Others say it is a transporter to bring aliens here for conquest. Some say it is a telecommunications device, while others think it will allow us to talk to God. Scientist Foster leads the effort to build two of the machines. McConaughey is her friend, a religious leader who questions whether we should be responding. The machine is designed for a single person to sit inside a massive capsule. Foster decides she should be the one, but others want the machine destroyed...
