Contest rant part deux...If I hear just one more person talk about the death of dramatic voices because the industry prefers non-obese singers I will stick a needle in my eye - or better yet, into the eye of the ill-informed critic who knows nothing of physiology or singing. For the millionth time - extra fat will NOT give you a big voice. Now, there are of course physical variables that are more conducive to having a big voice...namely nice big vocal folds, with great elasticity housed in a a great big head (I minimize the science here...but its the truth). There is nothing, read that again, NOTHING that your extra junk in the trunk can do to make your voice bigger or louder - in fact it could be just the opposite. I refer you back to Ms Simionato, Mr. DelMonaco and Mr. Giacomini. Further - I refer you to the great Luciano Pavarotti - whose voice matured but did not particularly grow in proportion to his waistline. Ill tell you what has killed off a fair amount of dramatic voices though...BAD PEDAGOGY. And 4000 seat theaters. And huge orchestras. And conductors who dont know how to get those large orchestras to play softer. And coaches who recommend rep, the vocal requirements of which they dont really understand. And while yall have your panties in a twist about the industry being lookist - what about it being age-ist. Premature identification as dramatic has claimed a lot of voices lives. Now - dont get all sappy on me - I mean within reason. 30 years old isnt a baby anything. But more than anything - the grim reaper of the dramatic voice lies in the mere DESIRE (the singers own or the desire of their mentors/employers) to be dramatic, versus technically sound (pun intended). So go ahead...have at me...theres still more to come.
