This includes people in, near or between Esperance, Southern Cross, Meekatharra, Kalgoorlie, Northam, Mandurah, the Perth Metropolitan area and surrounding areas. This is unusual weather for this time of year and could cause significant damage to homes and make travel dangerous. WHAT TO DO: DFES has these tips to help you and your family stay safe: • Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. • Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning. • If caught outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams. • If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. • If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. IF DRIVING: • Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. • Slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers. • Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen powerlines and loose debris. • If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. • Be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy and vehicles could become bogged. THUNDERSTORM DETAILS: As at 3.50pm on Saturday 18 October 2014 the Bureau of Meteorology advises severe thunderstorms are likely to produce destructive winds and large hailstones in parts of the Gascoyne, Goldfields, Eucla, Lower West, South East Coastal, Great Southern and Central Wheatbelt forecast districts. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding in parts of the Gascoyne, Goldfields, Eucla, Lower West, South Coastal, South East Coastal, Great Southern and Central Wheatbelt forecast districts. A low pressure system currently lies over inland parts of the South West Land Division with surface troughs extending through the northern Goldfields and towards the south and west coasts. A mid-level disturbance is also approaching from the west. A possible severe thunderstorm has been observed on radar over the northern suburbs and is tracking southwards. Large hail has also been reported in the northern suburbs. People are advised that there is a risk of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall for the remainder of Saturday. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected to continue through Sunday and may extend further west into the South Coastal district. Within the warning area north of a line from Mandurah to Corrigin to Israelite Bay thunderstorms may be accompanied by: - dangerous winds - large hail - heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding. Within the warning area south of a line from Corrigin to Israelite Bay, thunderstorms may be accompanied by heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding.
