Continued A-Z of VCFS... I- Immune function: Some with VCFS (not sure of percentage) have poor immune function due to low T cell counts or/& reduced thymic hormones which help T-lymphocyte maturation. T-cells are a type of immune cell. The specialized roles of T- cells are (1) to directly attack foreign antigens such as viruses, fungi, or transplanted tissues, and (2) to act as regulators of the immune system. T-cells develop from stem cells in the bone marrow, the immature cells migrate to the thymus. Bella has a low T cell count and has not had her thymus checked as far as Im aware. However, her last bloods also showed low lymphocytes. This is a big concern for us, as Bella is unable to have live vaccines due to her immune function not being strong enough to fight the vaccine. If we could have her vaccinated we would! We have watched children die from whooping cough who are otherwise healthy just because the parents have chosen not to vaccinate. I beg that you vaccinate your children, because we rely on your children to stay healthy, to keep Bella Healthy. If Bella were to catch a big bug, who knows what we would be facing. And please if your children are unwell, stay away. It may sound harsh but it is one thing that drives me crazy, that people knowingly bring their children out sick to share their bugs with children like Bella that can end up in hospital. Your child may cope but ours cant. We choose not to take Bella to many public events to keep her safe and well. However we cant keep her in a bubble, she still needs to experience life and fun. Please think hard about vaccination, as by vaccinating your child is saving others lives that cant. And please think twice about taking your sick children out, when you are putting others with suppressed immune functions at risk. Forgive me for my rant, but if it means one less person is going to put my baby at risk then it was all worth it.
