Continuing with our museum theme, this week, we are excited to feature the Kemp Center for the Arts! Located at 1300 Lamar, this unique gallery is overseen by Executive Director Carol Sales. Since 2000, beautiful pieces of art have been showcased at the Kemp Center, which some of you may remember as the Kemp Public Library. Originally started in the early 1990s as the “Arts Council of Wichita Falls”, the Kemp Center for the Arts is dedicated to strengthening the artistic, cultural, and educational quality of the surrounding region. Their goal is to help everybody, regardless of age or background, develop an appreciation for art and develop their inner artist. They believe that whenever people visit their gallery, artistic creativity is brought in and taken away. One of their core objectives is education. At both of their locations (the Kemp Center for the Arts downtown and The Forum on Speedway), the Kemp Center offers a variety of classes intended to help people discover and foster their creativity. Whether you are interested in music, cooking, or “traditional” arts like painting and drawing, the Kemp Center has a class for you! They also have sixteen different summer classes for children, and all of their teachers are certified. The goal of the classes is to help children create “an imaginary world that creates conversation”. There is always something new to see. All of the exhibits are completely changed out every two months. The Kemp Center is also the home to one of the only annual sculpture gardens in Texas, which means they are one of the few locations that actually changes their sculpture garden every year. The sculpture garden is truly engaging on all levels. Unlike many exhibits, the Kemp Center encourages people to actively interact with this interesting display. Children are invited to touch, feel, look and connect with the unique outdoor space. After wandering around the indoor exhibits, the Kemp Center encourages people to have a picnic on their lawn amongst the sculptures. The Kemp Center is absolutely FREE! It is a wonderful place to bring the arts to children. On November 22 they will be having a special holiday event where children can meet Santa, decorate cookies, and get into the holiday spirit while they wait for the City Lights parade to start. The event will last from 2:00-5:00pm, and stay tuned to find out more as the time comes! This is also a beautiful place to host your next event. Many couples have gotten married or celebrated at the Kemp Center. Contact them to make your reservation today!
