Contrast, I wanted to create a TV spot with the next - TopicsExpress

Contrast, I wanted to create a TV spot with the next slogan: ‘Save a poor African child now!’ Naturally your companies would donate millions ‘There goes the Westerner, sponsoring my TV spot with good intentions’ Ironically, I would have thought Millions of dollars in transactions for the poor African child Day in, day out. Reality, I see a Congolese girl It was last month that she was raped by a military gang in her own village and had lost her parents in war Five hours ago she went down to the market, negotiating to feed her two brothers I see a Congolese girl Two hours later she’s working on her homework and Ten years later she has become a great entrepreneur Sir, I can assure you, this is no TV spot This is the harsh reality. Surprising, I wanted to create a top three of the abilities of the African child: 1. Running 2. Singing 3. Running Yes my highness, I would invest all the money in training young talents for the Champions League. Reality, An Angolan boy in London, An unfamiliar city where he became homeless five years ago Today he works at a Chinese restaurant And tomorrow, He will be having a master degree in engineering and in ten year he will provide his hometown of self-sufficient solar energy Reality cannot be covered up in beautiful words, Reality is untouchable, Crystal clear. Yes your highness, I’ve just shown you reality Two life stories, one identical message. The Congolese girl, is she poor? – Does she suffer from hunger? Or yet: Rich, strong and hopeful? It’s your decision my highness. The Angolan boy, is he in need of help? In need of donations? Or yet: independent, decisive and full of hope? The African girl is the source of happiness She carries the continent on her shoulders and gives forth hope everyday She should have been a victim, My highness, She refused and became a fighter A struggle between who she is and what the TV spots wanted to make out of her A split between reality and literature Yes, An African boy has the spirit to be put in prison for 27 years for what he believes in and to be called a terrorist, to eventually be praised by his enemies. My highness, This is no myth, This is what an African child is capable of My highness, I welcome you on this journey Experience the beauty that can’t be fathomed Welcome into a new world Everything upside down: The African child, is no project anymore He fights for his dignity. Let’s hope, That it will begin with this writ. - Writen for UWAF‘s inspiration afternoon for the Day of the African Child, 2013, by Kiza Magendane
