Control over the way we die is not always given to us, but we can choose how we live. washingtonpost/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/09/26/scholar-zeke-emanuel-says-he-wants-to-die-at-75-heres-why-this-author-hopes-to-live/ Whenever I think about how we face serious illness and end-of-life care, I think of Atul Gawandes 2010 feature in The New Yorker on letting go: newyorker/magazine/2010/08/02/letting-go-2 Modern medicine is good at staving off death with aggressive interventions—and bad at knowing when to focus, instead, on improving the days that terminal patients have left. I know many family members find this a hard balance to strike: saying goodbye to those you love most has always been part of life, but its incredibly not to reach for and try some way, any way, to apply medicine to getting a few more days, weeks and years together.
